Evergreen

Never one to be pigeonholed as a mere ‘folkie’, as it were, Evergreen manages to be Carrie’s most eclectic and varied collection yet, featuring tracks ranging from the delicate folk of ‘Lost In The Right Time’, through the soul-blues of ‘Deep Blue Heaven’ and the poppier ‘Girl With A Feather’, all the way to the prog-rock influences displayed on the ambitious eight-minute ‘Keep In The Light’. Followers of Carrie’s career will be well aware of her classic ‘Maria And The Moon’, a haunting piece based on a remarkable book by author Louise Beech, and will no doubt be delighted to see that she has turned her inspiration to the work of Beech once again with ‘End Of Story’, which again ties in with another one of her books.

Illustrating the respect in which Carrie Martin is held is the line-up of guest musicians on the album. Oliver Wakeman (son, of course, of Rick, and like him a former member of Yes) plays on Keep In The Light as well as End Of Story, while guitarist Roger Fisher, formerly a key member of Heart, also appears on Keep In The Light, along with Jeremy Richardson and Wayne Proctor on bass and drums. Elsewhere ex-Argent guitarist  John Verity provides some bluesy guitar on Deep Blue Heaven, and Karl Cassidy (brother of the late singer Eva Cassidy) contributes violin on She Doesn’t Know. There are also appearances from Sarah Dean (aka ‘The Incredible String Blonde’) on harp, Andy Banfield on percussion and Jamie Mallender and Jim Waltham on bass. Finally, making it a ‘family affair’ of sorts, Carrie’s son Ben Martin himself chips in  to record guitar, vocal and harp, as well as sharing production duties. The CD release features one extra bonus track not included on the vinyl; a version of Gordon Giltrap’s piece ‘Loren’, from his album The Last Of England.  The vinyl, not to be outdone, features Luna; the title track from one of  Carrie’s earlier releases.

I have watched Carrie Martin’s musical gifts grow with each consecutive album. Her new album Evergreen is in my opinion the pinnacle of her songwriting and creative abilities.

The first being a cover of the iconic track Time After Time performed alongside my brilliant mentor Gordon Giltrap MBE .. this is the first single from the album and is already getting regular airplay in London
Secondly, Melanie Jane, my first ever original instrumental, I’m so proud of it.

Special guests:
Gordon Giltrap, Oliver Wakeman, Dave ‘Bucket’ Colwell alongside some amazing local musicians, my brilliant bassist Jim Waltham, Mikey Scott drums, Alan Drever-Smith percussion, Beth Nicholson Cello and Margaret Pinder double bass.
Backing vocals from Adam Norsworthy & Isobel Kimberely
Recorded by Mikey Scott, Ben Martin & Wayne Proctor
Produced by Carrie Martin, Ben Martin & Wayne Proctor
Mixed & mastered by Wayne Proctor/ House Of Tone

I’ve put my heart and soul into this one .. every word has come from my heart & hope you like it.
Much love x

Entity is the third album from the East Yorkshire based singer-songwriter and it shows an artist who is growing into her music and speaking with great confidence. Carrie is a ‘triple threat’, possessed of the ability to craft a fine song, nimble finger-picking skill, and a beguiling voice. Her tone rests somewhere between a young Kate Bush and All About Eve’s Julianne Regan: delicate but infused with an inner strength. A perfect combination to showcase her memorable tunes and evocative lyrics. ‘Talk In Colour’ is an infectious pop song that if there is any justice, will be gracing the BBC Radio 2 playlist before long.

Having heard this album I think if it weren’t for covid times this would have been a natural for radio 6 and Radio 2.

Carrie’s words for me are just pure poetry, written and sung from the heart creating beautiful images. She’s also a pretty fine guitarist as well as being a superb singer.

There is a touch of Kate Bush in the higher range of Martin’s voice and in her inflection. However, this is accompanied by a rich mezzo undertone that gives real depth to her singing and the emotion in which she infuses it – a perfect foil for the mature and thoughtful words.
